Design Inspiration: Glass Tiles

Glass tiles were once seen as an unusual choice for kitchens, but are rising in popularity for several reasons. For example, these tiles are extremely easy to maintain (the perfect material for resisting spills and those stains that do ‘stick’ are easy to wipe off), are very versatile, and can look fantastic in the right setting. The material should also be appreciated for its reflective properties: in rooms where natural light is scant, or a darker scheme is being used, glass tiles can lend the appearance of space and light.

Glass is extremely versatile and tiles can be found in all different colours, shapes and sizes. If you are having difficulty deciding on your perfect look, don’t be afraid to experiment: affix your colour and tile samples to walls and leave for a while, so that you can ‘live’ with the proposed bespoke kitchen designs and see which ideas work best for you.

Grey or green glass splashbacks and tiles with monochrome cabinetry and white granite or marble tops can create a fresh, modern look; whereas a mixture of colourful tiles would suit a retro kitchen perfectly. Be sure to also consider contemporary tiles with feature ‘crackles’ or a frosted finish.

However, if you really want to gesture to one of 2015’s biggest trends, a metallic tile is the choice for you. Copper hues are particularly popular at the moment, and burnished tiles can add instant warmth to any room; you can continue the theme by accessorising with bronze lamps, candle-holders, pots and picture frames. For a striking aesthetic, focus your metallic ‘accent’ in those high-impact tiling areas above the cooker and sink: these areas are real focal points and, with so much space at your disposal, you can afford to be bold.

Design Inspiration: Contemporary Classic

Marrying elements of modern and traditional can create elegant aesthetics that will never go out of style – so it’s no surprise that contemporary classic schemes are set to be popular in 2015.

Ultra-modern kitchens are on the way out, says designer Kesha Pillay, who notes that homeowners are opting for solid oak kitchens that are ‘warm, homey and reflect themselves’. Attention to detail and a mix of materials are cornerstones of this timeless look, Pillay comments: ‘This trend is affecting everything from cabinet design to colours, materials to textures. We are really mixing it up. Flat-panel cabinet doors are being replaced with classic door profiles, such as Shaker doors.’

As such, solid wood cabinetry with classic profiling – such as our Shaker-style Chatham doors – and ornate finishing touches – such as our decorative solid oak cornices and pilasters – are being touted as fashionable additions to 2015 designs. For a refined yet on-trend kitchen look, finish with granite or marble worktops, vintage brass and pewter fixings, and handmade sinks and taps.

Three of the Best: Cotswold Kitchens

The farmhouse look is ever popular, and our Cotswold doors – elegant yet homely solid oak frontals – are an essential item in any country kitchen.
We have enjoyed working with a number of clients on beautiful bespoke kitchen designs that make use of these decorative, high-quality doors. Below are a few of our favourite schemes; one case study, and two from our ‘Inspirations’ collection:

Kitchen Inspiration: Wimborne

One of our most popular kitchen ‘concepts’, this design is both classic and chic. Luxurious super stave black walnut worktops pair beautifully with cabinetry finished in Farrow & Ball’s Wimborne White shade: a uniquely soothing and welcoming white.

Case Study: Prague Villa

Our client required a cosmopolitan, inviting look for a space that would not only be used for informal dining but also business gatherings. Traditionally rustic elements such as wooden worktops and solid oak cabinets with handpainted Cotswold doors were accented by modern materials; we introduced glazed frontals, a black granite ‘effect’ cooker hood and a sleek black and cream range cooker to create a sense of contemporary charm.

Kitchen Inspiration: Classic Cotswold

A true farmhouse kitchen. This sophisticated take on a classic look mingles burnished vintage fixings with the warm tones of super stave iroko worktops and unpainted solid oak cabinetry. Delicate hints of ornamentation – from the handles to the handmade taps – complete the aesthetic.

If you would like more information on creating a ‘Cotswold’ look, or if you are considering your own kitchen project, please do contact us; alternatively, please pop into our Cheltenham showroom for a chat with our friendly team.
